Jerry Recco was 'bored stiff' watching strikeout-filled Yankees season opener

Boomer and Gio are a fan of the pitch clock speeding up games, and it seems to be universally praised among baseball fans, as the new rules showed an immediate impact on the length of games on Opening Day.

But Jerry Recco says the strikeout component of the modern game still makes the sport a snoozefest at times, and it was apparent during the Yankees’ season opener on Thursday afternoon.

“I was bored stiff watching this game yesterday,” Jerry said. “I fell asleep in the third inning. There’s nothing happening.

“They only have to get 54 outs. Thirty two of them were strikeouts!”

Gerrit Cole and Logan Webb, the two Opening Day starters, combined for 23 punchouts in what was a 5-0 win for the Yankees. It didn’t do much to help the league’s efforts to generate more action via balls in play, but Gio felt the other storylines woven within the game made it an intriguing watch.

“This was the first look I had in the regular season with the pitch clock, so I was interested,” Gio said. “Gerrit Cole was pitching really well.
Aaron Judge hits the home run, which was exciting…I wasn’t that bored.”
