Jerry: Giancarlo Stanton will only get worse, Yankees need to eat salary and trade him

Gio says the downfall of the Yankees began when Giancarlo Stanton was brought in after the magical 2017 season, and Jerry believes the franchise won’t be able to get back on track until they bite the bullet and eat the bulk of Stanton’s contract to ship him out.

“If you think it’s gonna get better with Stanton, you’re solely mistaken,” Jerry said. “This may be the best version of Stanton that’s left. A .200 hitter who will have some pop every 20 at-bats, who goes through horrible stretches, and he’s gonna be out there every day. Unless you find someone desperate enough to take him, and you’re paying for much of it.

“This is taking two steps back to take three steps forward.”

Gio is in full agreement with Jerry’s plan, except for one major problem: even if the Yanks ate the bulk of Stanton’s salary, he can’t see any team wanting to take the oft-injured slugger, and doesn’t believe it will be like Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, who still had something of value left in the tank when they were dealt by the Mets.

“There is not a single team out there that is gonna look at Giancarlo Stanton and say, even with another team paying ¾ of his salary, that he’s worth it,” Gio said.
