Joe B & Gio: Brian Cashman's Yankees tenure is long past its expiration date

With the Yankees enduring a disastrous trade deadline, in which they basically stood pat despite a roster filled with holes, Joe B and Gio revisited a conversation that has been had many times in recent years.

Is it time for Brian Cashman to be let go?

“It felt like, finally, the consensus was that it was time to make a change,” Gio said. “His contract, was up, he’s been there for a million years, it’s time for a fresh look at this organization, and Hal Steinbrenner, since Brian Cahsman is basically his adopted brother, decided not to do that…which meant Aaron Boone was coming back. Which meant this team was coming back.

“This is what you get. You get this lifeless, dead organization that is going nowhere.”

Joe also thinks Cashman has long overstayed his welcome in the Bronx, and it’s clear that the team needs a new strategy that may only be possible through a new voice in the front office.

“The Yankees need new voices there,” Joe said. “Cashman has been a great GM, but he’s been there too long. That’s it.”

Cashman led the Yankees through the last true dynasty in Major League Baseball, but now without a title since 2009, Gio says the luster around the longest tenured GM in the game has long since wore off.

“I’ve always compared the Yankees to that restaurant in the 90s that was great, and has hung on based on reputation, but if you go in there now, the carpet is old, there’s cobwebs up in the corner, the food isn’t as good, the waiters are on their phones,” Gio said. “Now it’s just hanging on by a thread based on reputation.”
