The Yankees are 3.5 games back of a playoff spot with two months to go in the season, but are reportedly on the fence when it comes to buying or selling at the trade deadline.
Gio can’t understand why the Bombers wouldn’t go all in and try to make a run, but Joe says the team’s current standing is a product of Hal Steinbrenner’s mindset.
“Hal Steinbrenner is only worried about the Yankee brand,” Joe said. “He’s selling out the building almost every night, they’re getting over 40,000 on a Tuesday against the White Sox. He’s making money…even though they haven’t won a World Series, they’re a contender every year, they’re in the playoffs more often than not, and he’s content with that.”
Joe says the Yankees clearly need more bats with their veterans struggling badly for most of the season, but with seats being filled and tickets being bought, he wouldn’t be surprised if the mission at the deadline was to get below the team’s current luxury tax tier.
“They need left-handed hitting,” Joe said. “And Stanton, LeMahieu, Anthony Rizzo, what happened to these guys?”
Gio believes the team’s inaction may be more of a product of an inflated belief in what this roster actually is.
“I think the Yankees overrate themselves,” Gio said. “They say they were one series away from the World Series last year. Were you? You got swept by the Astros, you weren’t even close, and you barely got past the Guardians. I think they overrate themselves, which is why it’s surprising to me that they’re not going for it.”
