What can the Yankees do to change their fortunes and get back to being a contender?
For Joe B, the solution is in their past, and a proven formula that the team got away from in recent years.
“Left handed power, left handed starting pitching,” Joe said. “That was always their formula. They got away from it.”
The Yankees began prioritizing right-handed power in their lineup after trading for Giancarlo Stanton in December of 2017, using the juiced ball era to thrive with power hitters like Stanton, Aaron Judge, Luke Voit, and Gleyber Torres, the latter swatting 38 home runs in 2019. But the Yanks consistently were shut down in the playoffs by premier righty pitching, and the Yanks tried to pivot with some left-handed pop via Anthony Rizzo, Joey Gallo, and Matt Carpenter, to varying results.
Joe says that has to be the team’s top priority moving forward, though the rotation is much further ahead in that initiative.
“You got Cortes and Carlos Rodon,” Joe said. “You gotta get some left handed power at Yankee Stadium. You do.”
