Jordan Montgomery clearly didn’t have it on Tuesday night, surrendering four extra-base hits in the first inning while getting rocked by the Mets, the most extra-base hits he’s allowed in a game all season.
“Felt like I was making decent pitches, but they must have had a good game plan against me, and it’s a really good lineup,” Montgomery said. “Just gotta be better.”
The same could be said about the Yankees pitching staff as a whole, which got off to a historic start before a brief hiccup by All-Star Nestor Cortes, a dramatic decline from Jameson Taillon, and an injury to Luis Severino.
“Not gonna be perfect all year,” Montgomery said. “If you have 30 starts, you’re gonna have fived stinkers. Hopefully this was one, and I’m gonna be right back at it tomorrow.”
Tuesday should certainly qualify as one of those stinkers, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings of work.
“I just couldn't get them to not foul it off,” Montgomery said. “I felt like I had pretty good stuff, but it's just, I guess I was due a bad one.”
