Jordan Montgomery ties unfortunate Yankee record, through no fault of his own

Jordan Montgomery is now a part of an unfortunate piece of Yankee history, and none of it was of his own doing.

After throwing a quality start on Friday night against the Red Sox, allowing three runs on three hits over six innings, Montgomery departed with a 3-0 deficit, marking the fifth straight time that the lefty has received zero run support. That’s tied for the most in Yankee history, even with Bill Short in 1960 and Fritz Peterson in 1967.

The shorthanded Yankee offense, without Gio Urshela, Aaron Judge and Luke Voit, couldn’t get anything going against Boston lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, who entered his start with an ERA just below six, forcing Montgomery to take a loss after a strong outing against a tough Red Sox lineup.

But Montgomery says he isn’t focused on the run total on his own side, only the opponent’s.

“I’m just doing my job, going out there and focusing on hitters, trying to get outs and keep us in it,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery has been decent in this five-start stretch, pitching to a 4.13 ERA and striking out 30 batters in 28.1 innings. Of these last five appearances, three have resulted in a quality start, but the Yanks have scored just seven runs total in those five games, and obviously none of them have come while Montgomery was in the game.

Both of Montgomery’s last two outings have been quality starts, and the Yankees were shut out both times. Montgomery will need some kind of run support when he’s back on the mound next week, or else he’ll have sole possession of an unwanted Yankee record.

“I’m gonna keep being a good teammate and supporting the hitters,” Montgomery said. “If they’re not scoring runs or they’re scoring a ton of runs, they’re trying their hardest and I’ve always got their backs. I’m just gonna keep going out there and trying to be better.”
