Evan posed the question of whether or not it was worth it for the Yankees in the hypothetical situation that they win the 2024 World Series before Juan Soto leaves in free agency the following winter.
Morash wouldn’t go for it.
“Nope. Can’t let him walk, even if you win,” Morash said. “It is not worth it if it’s only one year.”
Fortunately for Morash, he doesn’t believe that the Yankees made Wednesday’s trade without having a strong desire to sign Soto to a long-term deal, whether it is via an extension or in free agency next offseason.
“I don’t believe there’s even a faction of my mind that the Yankees, if they win a World Series, would not re-sign this guy, because they know they PR nightmare, and this is not the Pittsburgh Pirates,” Morash said. “I’m not gonna be hypocritical and not crush them if they let him walk…but, your sister’s ass if you think they made this trade thinking it’s only about 2024.
“If he’s 25 years old and maybe the best hitter in baseball coming off a World Series with him, it is unacceptable, for one year, to not go above and beyond and make sure you re-sign him…I’m telling you right now, if you’re not gonna be the highest bidder for him, then do not make this move.”
