Keith: This could be biggest trade deadline of Brian Cashman's career
As the trade deadline approaches, Keith says it is beyond absurd to think that the Yankees are considering anything but being all-in buyers despite their recent struggles.
Regardless of their play of late, the Yanks still hold the top Wild Card spot while trailing by just two games in the AL East, so Brian Cashman will be aggressive in the coming weeks.
“I’ve been saying that this is the most importantly deadline maybe of his career because of the generational talent you have,” Keith said. “Because, in theory, this is one year of Juan Soto, and Gerrit Cole and Aaron Judge ain’t getting any younger.
“They’re going all in. They’re gonna try to add as many pieces to this team as they can.”
Many fans believe the Yanks could have too many needs to fill before the deadline, pointing to a starting rotation that has cratered in recent weeks, a weak lineup that has holes in the infield, and a bullpen that has struggled to get strikeouts all season. But Keith says the latter may be rounding into form, and the needs may not be as big as some fans believe.
“I’m looking at the Yankees right now, and they actually have some guys in the bullpen,” Keith said. “I don’t mind Jake Cousins, he’s been decent. He’s on the cusp of the circle of trust. Michael Tonkin is in there. Luke Weaver is definitely in there. Clay Holmes is trying to get back in there as an Allan-Star. Tommy Kahnle is trying to get in there…they have some guys that are rounding into form.
“You have a rookie in Ben Rice and a veteran in Anthony Rizzo…At least we don’t need to worry about getting a first baseman at the trade deadline now.”
