As the Yankees come out of an off day, Keith was asked by a caller what should be Brian Cashman’s top priority at the trade deadline, as the team has suddenly shown multiple needs in their recent slump.
For Keith, he wants to see the Yanks add more relief pitching to help a bullpen that has been uncharacteristically ineffective this season, especially when it comes to logging strikeouts.
“It’s the bullpen for me,” Keith said. “In the postseason, you need big outs. You need someone who can go in there and get big outs. In the postseason, too many times games are won 3-1, 2-1, and you have to hold that lead for three innings.”
Scott Effross hopes to help in that regard, but Keith says the Yanks still need to look outside of the organization to get more help and lock down one-run games that are sure to come in October.
Then, he would look to the infield.
“I would like a utility infielder,” Keith said. “Someone who could play first base if you don’t trust Rizzo or [Ben Rice], or someone who could play third base…if they had a guy who could play multiple different positions in the infield and put bat to ball…I think that would be the way.”
