The mood around the Yankees is bleak, with the team in serious danger of missing out on the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
Keith wonders if that level of disappointment will finally motivate the owner to shake things up, though he isn’t sure if Hal Steinbrenner cares about his ownership legacy as much as his father did.
“What is it gonna take for Hal Steinbrenner to realize you need to change?” Keith said. “The standard of excellence your father set, you have fallen so far from it. And you’re getting up there in age. We’re already onto 15 years. Do you want to be 55 without a World Series, or 60 without a World Series? Because that’s your legacy. That’s the story you’re writing.”
Keith, like many others, believes Hal is content with building a playoff team and hoping for the best in the postseason, but will there come a time where the owner has a shift in motivation to make a stronger push towards a title?
“The money is gonna be there,” Keith said. “The Yankees are valued at $7 billion. No matter what they do on the field. But don’t you want to have a chip of your own? A parade of your own?
“I don’t know what it’s gonna take. Them missing the postseason? That’s happened. That’s not gonna be it. Them missing the postseason in back to back years, maybe? I don’t want to go through another year of that. If they miss the postseason this year, they gotta make changes.”
