Keith: Leave Anthony Volpe in the bottom of the lineup for now
Anthony Volpe had a rare hitless night on Tuesday, though his season OPS still stands at a robust 1.044, while batting .375 on the young campaign.
Volpe’s hot start has led many to wonder when the shortstop will become the team’s leadoff hitter, especially while Gleyber Torres continues to struggle at the plate, and DJ LeMahieu remains on the IL. Aaron Boone said Volpe’s future is atop the lineup, and Keith says that future doesn’t need to be now.
“Man, leave him in the bottom half of the lineup,” Keith said. “Six, seven, whatever it might be. Let that kid keep showing up and doing it.
“I don’t think he’s gonna change if you move him to the leadoff spot, I just don’t think there’s any rush. They’re winning. They’re in first place.”
Volpe hit all around the lineup last season to mixed results, and while he has flown out of the gate in his second MLB season, Keith says it is best to leave Volpe where he is, at least for now.
“You don’t just make changes to make changes,” Keith said. “Now, Gleyber Torres is not a leadoff hitter…everybody knows that…but I just don’t understand the rush to put Volpe as the leadoff hitter when he’s playing like an All-Star in the bottom half of the lineup.”
