After the Yankees lost an ugly game to the Mets in the Bronx on Tuesday, with the same old problems flaring up, Keith said it’s performances like that loss that make it frustrating to be a fan right now.
“That’s why I’m detached,” Keith said. “I don’t know what this is. I don’t know what the Yankees think they are. The game has completely changed, and they haven’t adapted to it.”
What makes it more frustrating for Keith is being inside a sold-out Yankee Stadium, where the money flows in and ownership seems to be fine with teetering on the fence of just being good enough to get into the playoffs.
“Ownership is cool. I do think the Yankees are gonna make moves at the deadline and make the postseason, but so what?” Keith said. “So they can get bounced in the Wild Card round, or escape the Wild Card and strike out a bunch in the ALDS? From the end of last year to this year, they are not good. This is the New York Yankees. They’re not supposed to be a .500 team. They have the money, the resources, the fans.
“They force these guys [like Donaldson] on us. We don’t know anything, right? We’re delusional fans, we’re spoiled fans. We don’t know anything. We’re at every game. We read every article. We go to the stadium. We see it with our own eyes. And they piss on our leg and tell us it’s raining. Then go buy your chicken bucket, get you a 99 Burger, and while you’re at it, buy a $50 hat from the team store.”
For Keith, the Yankees have not only become mediocre, but predictable, to where he knows what the explanation will be at the end of the season when they inevitably fall short of their preseason goal.
“They’re making money hand over fist, fans are showing up, and they can say, ‘The postseason is a crapshoot. The league closed the gap on us,’” Keith said. “I know they’re gonna blame this season on the wall in Dodger Stadium.
“This is not what made me a die-hard fan. I love the Yankees, I love the culture and all that, the history, the uniforms, but the product on the field is not it…They’re just hoping to be the crap in the crapshoot.”
