The Yankees are reportedly bringing back Aaron Boone for the final year of his contract, which doesn’t inspire much excitement from Keith, who would have preferred a new face in the dugout.
“They’re gonna honor his contract over finding a better manager,” Keith said. “They’re gonna honor Aaron Judge’s word that it’s not Boone’s fault, but how many times have we seen Boone get ejected? That’s his No. 1 thing. Boone is known for being ejected, because it’s the only thing he can control. Everything else is controlled by people around him. The only thing he’s not told when to do, is when to chew out an umpire, and he’s great at that, but it doesn’t help the Yankees win, because all the umpires have it out against the Yankees since Brett Gardner banged his bat on the dugout.
“The audit was run already? Isn’t Boone a part of the audit?”
Even if Boone wasn’t the main problem, Keith believes the team could have benefitted from a more hard-nosed manager in the clubhouse, not one that just shows that side in interactions with umpires.
“If they fired Aaron Boone, that would be a sign that ‘This isn’t good enough,’” Keith said.
“I need an authority figure in that clubhouse…I need somebody that doesn’t have pet names for every guy on that team. ‘Gleyby, Judgey, Kingy,’ What are we doing? We’re trying to win. I need a manager that is not their friend.”
