Keith sounds off on Gleyber Torres 'going out sad'

Gleyber Torres made his league-leading 14th error by a second baseman on Monday night, the second night in a row he fumbled a routine ground ball that would have ended an inning.

It sparked a rant from Keith later that night, as he lamented what the former top prospect has become after beginning his big-league career with loads of promise.

“I’m disappointed in you. You’re going out sad,” Keith said. “You were the one. Just a baby, 21 years old. I’ll always remember there was a graphic of him, Ronald Acuna, Juan Soto, and Fernando Tatis Jr. as the new Latin explosion, faces of Major League baseball. The new superstars coming up that will be in the MVP hunt.

“The routine is supposed to be routine. And you’re on a team with Aaron Judge who could have said ‘I’m not moving to right field. They build the Judge’s Chambers behind me. Juan Soto is great, but why would I move over to center field for him?’ You’re on the same team where Alex Rodriguez was the better shortstop than Derek Jeter, but he wanted to win…so he learned how to play third base.”

Keith wants the Yanks to move on from Torres so his defensive miscues and baserunning blunders don’t burn the team in October, but if he isn’t moved, he doesn’t want to see him starting at second base come October.

“If Gleyber Torres is gone, he earned it. He earned his ticket for sure on the way out,” Keith said. “Can’t fool me again. I don’t want to be fooled in October…they can send Gleyber Torres anywhere, because this guy had the audacity to say he’s a second baseman. You lead the league in errors as a second baseman.”
