Keith sounds off on Yankees 'coddling' of Gleyber Torres: 'Has to end'
Gleyber Torres had more defensive miscues in Toronto this week, and has been off to a brutal start both at the plate and at second base to begin the 2024 season.
Keith made it clear on Thursday night that he’s fed up with it.
“The coddling of Gleyber Torres has to end,” Keith said. “I’m so tired of doing things for Gleyber Torres.
“‘Let’s move Gleyber Torres back to second base, and he can only play second after we thought he was our shortstop.’ ‘Gleyber is still not figuring it out on the basepaths. Gleyber is still bobbling balls, not knowing where to throw the ball. Gleyber is still not hustling.’”
Torres is in a contract year and not off to a good start at all, despite being the Yankees’ best offensive player outside of a healthy Aaron Judge last season. There is plenty of time to turn things around, but Keith has already seen enough.
“This whole Gleyber Torres experience, for as good as the kid can be at times, it has been super frustrating and it’s time to move on,” Keith said. “I’ve been trying to trade him since the lockout. I’m tired of seeing it. He’s not that good for what he does on the downside, what he does to effect winning.”
