The Yankees have won two straight games against teams over .500 for the first time in a month, picking up a clutch 4-3 win over the Astros to gain in the Wild Card race.
Just days before, fans in the Bronx were calling for Brian Cashman’s job after an inactive trade deadline, and Keith says those chants to fire Cashman have become a source of motivation for the players, who want to show up for their GM.
“The Yankees have been forced to sink or swim. They didn’t make cuts. They didn’t sell off. They kept these guys at the deadline,” Keith said. “What does that mean? It means the Yankee organization expects you to be able to get it done.
“They didn’t add anybody to help you. They feel they have enough talent in the room. Are you gonna fail or are you gonna bail Brian Cashman out? I think they’re in the process of trying to bail Brian Cashman out. I think they’re in the process of trying to have some pride, string together some wins, and get to the postseason to bail Brian Cashman out in the first year of his contract.”
Many fans have long been calling for a change at GM, but the players that Cashman brought to the team likely want to show why signing or trading for them was the right move, which would be a positive reflection on Cashman, the longest tenured GM in the sport.
“As crazy as that sounds…yeah, that’s what they got to do,” Keith said. “I had a caller ask me if he thinks the players hear the ‘Fire Cashman’ chants. Yeah, they do…they can feel the energy in the stands, and they don’t want that. it’s on them. It’s on the players, ultimately.
“Cashman doesn’t get any at-bats or throw any pitches. What I’ve seen the last two nights is a team that got off the mat…it’s now or never.”
