The Yankees picked up a breezy 8-1 win on Wednesday night, sporting a lineup that included Austin Wells back behind the plate and Oswald Peraza at third base. In Tuesday night’s series opener against the Guardians, Peraza was at the hot corner, and Oswaldo Cabrera took his spot for three at-bats later in the game.
Keith wants to see that trend continue down the stretch, and wants Aaron Boone to play Wells, Peraza, and the rest of the Yankee youngsters more often.
“I want to see these young guys. I want to see the young Yankees,” Keith said. “I’m done with the old. I don’t care who has done it before. Give me the homegrown, young Yankees, Baby Bombers 2.0.
“Austin Wells back in the lineup, good. Oswald getting the start, good. Let these young guys play and get that action. They’re the future.”
Instead of more at-bats by DJ LeMahieu, Jose Trevino, or Anthony Rizzo when he returns from injury, Keith wants this next wave of Yankee youth to get as much run as possible to see if they have staying power.
“If I keep telling you they have to keep Juan Soto and Aaron Judge together, they’re gonna fill in the blanks with young talent,” Keith said. “They’re not gonna be able to spend much else.”
