Aaron Boone announced Wednesday that Scott Effross is out until summer with back surgery, which Keith says is another demerit on what has become a truly disastrous trade deadline performance from Brian Cashman in 2022.
“The 2022 trade deadline, I looked at it as, ‘This is an opportunity for the Yankees to bolster a team that many were saying could potentially win a championship,’ and they did the opposite,” Keith said.
“It’s funny. When you look back, everybody got hurt. The best move of that 2022 trade deadline was getting rid of Joey Gallo for Clayton Beeter.”
Andrew Benintendi, Frankie Montas, Harrison Bader, Lou Trivino, and Effross represented the big additions to a team that rolled out to a start that rivaled that of the 1998 team in terms of wins and losses. Benintendi broke a hamate bone on a swing after finally getting going at the plate, while Montas’ shoulder issues that plagued him before the trade came back down the stretch.
Effross underwent Tommy John surgery, and now will miss even more time.
“They traded away Jordan Montgomery for Harrison Bader in a walking boot. And I was all for it,” Keith said. “Monty’s games were just slow paced. It was a bore. And you have to give to get. They had to give Jordan Montgomery away to get a center fielder, because Aaron Hicks was signed to a seven-year, $70 million deal…and he was trash. Frankie Montas was terrible and missed all of last year…Lou Trivino, he missed all of last year with Tommy John.
“Maybe if they moved on from Peraza, they could have gotten Luis Castillo…where is Peraza playing this year? He’s a backup unless someone gets hurt.”
