The Yankee offense once again looked inept in a 14-1 loss to the Orioles on Thursday night, as the veteran combination of Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu, and Josh Donaldson managed just two singles in 10 at-bats, while Giancarlo Stanton was given the night off.
Those veterans have been expected to carry the offense with Aaron Judge on the IL, but Keith says that group simply looks old now.
“All of a sudden, you look around this Yankee team, and they’re looking older than they’re supposed to be,” Keith said. “DJ LeMahieu, he had his best two years here…then we had to pay him, and he hasn’t been the same since…now, you kind of don’t want him out there every day. You’re not sure he can be an everyday player anymore.
“Anthony Rizzo…I think Father Time is tapping him on the shoulder. It sucks, because Rizzo is such a good player, but he looks lost at the plate right now, and he looks like he’s showing his age.
“An older guy like Josh Donaldson, once in a while you’ll get a home run, or a good week or series, but not consistently enough to justify the trade or what you’re paying him…I’m not made at Donaldson, but I just don’t know why he’s on the team or why they traded for him.”
LeMahieu’s batting average is down to .219, Donaldson .144, and Rizzo .261 after a fast start to the season. Stanton hasn’t been any better. All are above the age of 33, and Keith believes all of their best days are behind them.
