Keith: Yankees could use some more 'pissed off' displays like Marcus Stroman to Gleyber Torres
As the Yankees look to end their malaise heading into a series with the Rays on Tuesday night, Keith says he wants to see the team show a little more fire on the field, even if it comes off as unbecoming to some.
Much like Marcus Stroman getting fired up and frustrated on the mound when Gleyber Torres couldn’t complete a double play in Toronto last month.
“There’s not one guy out there who is out there pissed off,” Keith said. “We saw a little of that with Marcus Stroman. Even if it looked irrational at the time…he was pissed off. A guy who grew up in New York rooting for the Yankees…even if it was a little out of pocket or not right to show up Gleyber Torres, it came from somewhere. It was pent-up frustration…but you know what? That woke the team up. That woke Gleyber Torres up.
“I want to see more guys be upset about losing. The fans are upset. Listen to the radio. Listen to this station. The fans are ready to fire everybody.”
Instead, Aaron Boone and several of his players continue to preach patience publicly, noting the long season and the ebbs and flows that come with it. Keith wants to see more urgency, even if it means taking Stroman’s lead and disrupting the typical operating procedure of the Yankees.
“Maybe they’ll have a team meeting where Aaron Boone says ‘it’s all right in front of us.’ It is until it isn’t,” Keith said. “There has to be accountability. There has to be a respect for the culture, the history, the team and city you represent, and understand that this is not good enough.”
