Loogy: Yankees will fire Aaron Boone, but keep Brian Cashman if team misses playoffs

Joe B and Loogy filled in on the afternoon drive on Thursday, and opened the show discussing the debacle that is the 2023 Yankees.

After another lifeless performance in Wednesday’s loss to the Angels, Carlos Rodon drew criticism for blowing a kiss to an angry fan as he came off the field, and Anthony Rizzo was criticized for laughing in the dugout with the Yanks trailing 4-0, on their way to being swept.

Loogy said it’s just a bad look all around, especially for a team that came into the season with self-proclaimed World Series aspirations.

“If you’re that soft and that weak mentally - it’s not like it was the Bronx and 30,000 people are giving it to you,” Loogy said. “And you stink, the team stinks - to me, early on, I felt this way for Chris Bassitt. Sometimes, guys just aren’t built for this area.

“You have to have a little bit of an idea of what’s going on…we are, with our teams, mated for life like geese. So we as fans take it harder than the players, always. You don’t want to see guys laughing in the dugout while you’re getting swept by the Angels and can’t get a hit.”

Fan patience is clearly running out, and Loogy says he could see patience running out in the front office. Despite extending the manager after the 2021 campaign, Loogy could see Aaron Boone being fired if the Yankees can’t right the ship and miss the playoffs this year.

“If the Yankees miss the playoffs, Boone is gone,” Loogy said. “I think Cashman stays. I think Boone will be the scapegoat, and Cashman, who Yankee fans say has a lifetime contract, can survive one more manager.”
