Looking at Yankees' historic start to season by the numbers

With Wednesday’s comeback win over the Blue Jays, the Yankees won their league-best 22nd game of the season, tied for the sixth-best 30-game start in franchise history.

In the team’s eight best 30-game starts to a season, the end result has been a trip to the World Series, with the Yanks winning seven of them.

The 2022 Yankees are only two games off the franchise-best 30-game start of the 1939 and 1958 squads, both of which won the World Series, and one game off the pace of the legendary 1998 Yanks, which won 114 games en route to a title.

The Yanks got another home run in Wednesday’s win, this one thanks to Gleyber Torres, as the Bombers now have the third-most home runs in all of baseball this season. The power has been there, as it was in the team’s best days under Aaron Boone, but the team is now 13th in the league in strikeouts, a welcomed change from recent seasons.

The Yanks hold the second-best total ERA in the majors at 2.60, trailing only the Dodgers, and moved to 13-0 on the season when scoring five or more runs, a testament to their pitching staff. The pitching has also put the clamps down with runners in scoring position, holding opponents to a batting average of .158 in such situations, second best in the league.

The Bombers lead the league with four walk-off wins, and made another comeback on Wednesday, showing their versatility when it comes to pulling out a victory.

“I like that we’ve won in a lot of different ways,” Aaron Boone said. It’s been pitching or defense some days, maybe a baserunning plays, we’ve had a handful of games where we’ve scored  a bunch of runs…and we’ve scrapped in games late...it’s been nice that it’s come in a lot of different ways. That’s built confidence in that room that we don’t have to win in one way.

“I feel like in every area, we’re strong. Perhaps more complete than we’ve been in previous years…but the whole package, we really feel like we can win a game in a lot of different ways.”

The Yanks’ 10 comeback wins are most in all of baseball, their win Wednesday clinched their seventh straight series victory, and logged another win over a division rival, one that expects to compete for the AL East crown. It’s still early, but the Yankees are pushing the right buttons when they need to, and it has led to a historic start to the season.
