Luis Gil sets Yankees record for scoreless innings, promptly charged with three runs

Luis Gil now has his place among legendary Yankees record-holders like Joe DiMaggio and newly-minted Hall of Famer Derek Jeter.

When Gil struck out Teoscar Hernandez to end the third inning of Wednesday’s Yankees-Blue Jays game, he ran his streak of scoreless innings to 18 2/3 – officially passing Slow Joe Doyle for the longest streak to begin a Yankees career.

Doyle’s 18 scoreless innings in 1906 was the previous record, as he had pitched back-to-back complete game shutouts in August of that year before yielding a first-inning run in his third start.

The new record came on an otherwise forgettable night for Gil, who threw 91 pitches and walked seven – the most by any Yankees starter this season – in just 3 1/3 innings. He left after walking the bases loaded in the fourth, the second straight inning he had loaded the bases with one out, and the streak ended one pitch later when Lucas Luetge uncorked a wild pitch on his first pitch to score Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Per YES Network statistician James Smyth, Gil's streak officially ended at 18 2/3 innings despite him getting an out in the fourth. In this case, MLB stats would have only counted the partial inning had he not been charged with a run at all before the inning ended, even if it was an inherited run allowed by Luetge, so the out in the fourth recorded before the run scored isn't calculated in the streak.

Gil ended up charged three runs overall, as Luetge also allowed a two-run single to Marcus Semien in the inning (and got out of it when Semien was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double), leaving Gil with a 1.42 ERA in 19 innings pitched this season.
