The Yankees appear to have caught a big break with the outlook for Luis Severino.
After seeking a second opinion on the MRI on his pitching shoulder, Aaron Boone told reporters on Thursday that Severino has no structural damage, and he will be monitored day by day.
Severino won’t pitch through this week, but the MRI results are much more favorable than the alternative after he felt tightness while warming up for a rehab start with Triple-A Scranton.
For Severino, the shoulder issue is the second setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He had been progressing nicely before suffering a groin strain, and appeared to be nearing a return once again before being pulled from his last rehab outing before it ever began.
Severino hasn’t pitched for the Yankees since the 2019 ALCS, but was the team’s bonafide ace during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He has been battling multiple injuries since 2019.
While the news is certainly favorable, another week of no throwing will take Severino close to September before he can begin tossing again, so his season could still be in jeopardy if the Yankees move forward with extra caution.
