Luis Severino's return pushed back a month due to groin strain

The Yankees were inside a month from getting Luis Severino back in the rotation, but now that return has been pushed back another month.

Aaron Boone told reporters on Tuesday that Severino suffered a low grade two groin strain in his rehab start with High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday, which an MRI revealed, and it will be an added month onto his originally anticipated return from Tommy John surgery.

“He’s in New York now, he’s already up and doing some things as far as on the treadmill and things like that, just to keep him active,” Boone said. “We’ll probably try to keep his arm going even this week a little bit, probably start some light catch seated down and everything, but we’ll hold his return back by about a month, we think. We were hoping to get him back by the end of this month. That will be on hold as he tries to get that right over the next couple weeks.”

Severino was pitching in his second inning of work on Saturday when he delivered a pitch and immediately limped around the mound. He was helped off the field and struggled to put any weight on his right leg. He is working his way back from injuries that have kept him off a major league mound since the 2019 ALCS.

Severino was reaching 98 mph with his fastball early in his rehab assignment, and had pitched 1.2 innings on Saturday with three strikeouts before going down with the injury.
