Luis Severino scratched from potential final rehab start

Luis Severino was supposed to make what could have been his final rehab start on Friday before returning to the Yankees, but instead, there are more concerns about whether he will make an appearance in pinstripes at all this season.

Severino did not take the mound when the Triple-A RailRiders took the field on Friday night, and Scranton manager Doug Davis told reporters that the righty “didn’t feel right” during warm-ups, suggesting he felt tightness in his pitching shoulder.

Severino had done longtoss in the outfield and then moved to the bullpen to continue his pregame routine, but it never went further than that, and he will now return to New York to be evaluated. He will see a doctor on Monday.

Davis added that it “didn’t seem like it was anything serious.”

Severino is already trying to work himself back from a setback he suffered last month, straining his groin in a rehab start in his initial recovery from Tommy John surgery. The two-time All-Star hasn’t pitched a game for the Yankees since the 2019 ALCS.

The Yankees could desperately use some pitching help due to multiple injuries, even with Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery set to return this week, but it looks like Severino won’t be a potential reinforcement, at least not as soon as the team had hoped.
