Luis Severino likely to start season on IL with lat strain

UPDATE: Aaron Boone told reporters that Luis Severino has a low grade lat strain and will start the season on the IL. Clarke Schmidt will take his spot in an already banged-up rotation.

The Yankees will reportedly be down yet another starting pitcher when Opening Day arrives.

Luis Severino will no longer pitch on Sunday, in what was supposed to be the righty’s final spring training start before the start of the season, and according to Max Goodman of NJ.com, the oft-injured righty is dealing with an injury that will cause him to miss regular season time.

Severino had been laboring through an awful spring, posting a 9.00 ERA in five starts, but his last outing was his best of the season, striking out nine after allowing a first-inning home run.

Severino has been bit by the injury bug since 2018, when a lat strain, rotator cuff inflammation, and Tommy John surgery followed, leading the former Cy Young candidate to make only 26 starts since the end of that 2018 campaign.

The Yankees will already begin the season with Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas on the IL.
