Luis Severino's MRI getting sent for second opinion

Luis Severino’s MRI is being sent for a second opinion, as the Yankees will wait and see to find out if the righty’s season is in jeopardy with just seven weeks remaining until the playoffs, if the Yanks make it that far.

Regardless of how the second opinion turns out, Severino won’t throw again for the rest of this week.

“It’s being sent out for a second opinion,” Aaron Boone said before Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Red Sox. “Until we have that second opinion, which hopefully we’ll have over the next 24-48 hours, I know it’s being sent out today. He won’t throw this week, but let’s wait to get all the opinions in.”

Severino was warming up for a rehab start for Triple-A Scranton, a rehab he had recently resumed after straining his groin, when he said something “didn’t feel right” and never threw a pitch from the mound. Severino said he felt tightness in his shoulder.

Severino is on a four-year, $40 million contract but has not pitched since the 2019 ALCS. He has been out since prior to the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery, and was limited in 2019 due to a lat injury.

Boone wouldn’t say if there was concern that Severino could wind up not throwing a pitch for the Yankees this season, though they will likely know more later Tuesday or on Wednesday.

“I’m not ready to go there at all yet,” Boone said.
