Report: Luke Voit drawing trade interest in discussions with Yankees

The Yankees are clear buyers at the deadline after bringing in Joey Gallo on Thursday, but if they needed to part ways with an established starter in order to make another move, Luke Voit is reportedly drawing interest as a potential trade chip.

Jack Curry of the YES Network reports that Voit, last year’s MLB home run leader, has drawn interest in trade discussions that the Yankees have had with multiple teams. The first baseman is on the IL with a bone bruise in his knee but is set to return this weekend against the Marlins, Aaron Boone said earlier this week.

Voit has been one of the Yankees’ best bats since arriving late in the 2018 season, but has struggled to stay healthy. He was limited in the second half of the 2019 season due to a core injury, and played through constant pain last year due to a foot issue. So far this season, he has been on the IL three times for separate injuries, suffering a torn meniscus in spring training, an oblique strain and now a bone bruise.

Voit has a .698 OPS with the Yanks this season, but now in his fourth season in pinstripes, has an .888 OPS with 60 home runs over that time, a span of 242 games.

A Voit trade could mean the Yankees will shift around their infield, as Gleyber Torres seems like a prime candidate to return to second base, which could slide LeMahieu over to first, opening up a spot for a new face at shortstop.
