Chris McMonigle had been against adding Nolan Arenado for the Yankees, as he was hesitant to commit to an aging player past their prime.
But with the potential of DJ LeMahieu starting at the hot corner in 2025, C-Mac is now in on Arenado in the Bronx.
“I can’t have DJ LeMahieu as my third baseman,” C-Mac said. “I can’t even have that be a possibility. And I know they’re not going to go get Bregman…I need a third baseman.
“I am more and more open, and starting to think they should go get Paul Goldschmidt’s buddy and bring Nolan Arenado to this team.”
Arenado is only 33, but he has dropped off drastically offensively since leading the league in WAR in 2022. But he still provides a plus glove and was above league average at the plate in 2024, and perhaps a change of scenery to a contender like the Yankees could make the move worthwhile.
“At first I hated it…if you can get the Cardinals to eat enough money where it’s around $13-15 million a year for the next three years for Nolan Arenado, you move Jazz to second, you have Goldschmidt at first and Volpe at short, you no longer only have the best pitching staff in the American league. You have the best defensive team in the American League,” C-Mac said.
“You get excellent defense. I’m starting to come around on going out there and getting Nolan Arenado, because something has to be done.”
