News of Aaron Boone’s contract extension elicited some criticism from Yankee fans, a response that Chris McMonigle cannot get behind.
In fact, he says Boone haters are lost, and blinded by the declaration that anything less than a World Series title is a failure.
“I just don’t get it. I’ll never understand it,” C-Mac said. “I don’t know why Yankee fans hate this guy so much.
“He’s got a damn near .600 winning percentage. He’s won 600 games. The owner is cheap, the GM sucks, yet he has won more games with a better winning percentage than only a handful of managers in the history of the sport.”
Boone led the Yanks to 100 wins in each of his first two seasons as manager, has missed the playoffs only once, and ended the team’s 15-year pennant drought. But fans want to see championships, and Boone hasn’t hoisted that World Series trophy yet. C-Mac says criticism over that is unfair and shortsighted.
“I know he hasn’t won a World Series. I get that,” C-Mac said. “Eventually he’ll have to. But he just won a pennant.
“The Yankees haven’t necessarily overachieved in the playoffs, but their best player who is the best hitter in the sport, who they clearly rely on and build their team around, has been an absolute zero. I don’t know how you blame the manager for that.”
