Michael King said to hell with technology during the ninth inning of Tuesday’s walk-off win for the Yankees.
In the midst of what would be an impressive, game-saving outing, the Yankee reliever believed his PitchCom was malfunctioning, so he took the device and hurled it towards his own dugout, trying to move quickly to avoid a pitch clock violation. His hurried throw caused the device to sail over the dugout and into the stands, where a surprised fan caught the improbable souvenir.
“The one I got didn’t work. It just happened where I was hitting slider the same time Ben [Rortvedt] was hitting sinker, so every time I hit slider, it was coming through sinker,” King explained. “In between pitches, it did it when I knew he wasn’t hitting it, so I knew it wasn’t working…I just took it off and chucked it. I thought it was definitely gonna land in front of our dugout, and it kind of took off like a Frisbee. I saw it floating and then I saw it almost hit a fan. Apparently they were hitting the button. Luckily it wasn’t working.”
King managed to close out the ninth, and work around the ghost runner on second to begin extra innings in the 10th, to set Anthony Volpe up for a walk-off sac fly.
