Nestor Cortes was one of the voices in the Yankees clubhouse last year that called for the addition of a team pet, and they got one shortly after in a rescue turtle named Bronxie.
Bronxie quickly became a hit, even became a good luck charm as his arrival paralleled a big Yankees winning streak in September of last season. But he won’t be around in 2022, at least not in the clubhouse, as Cortes revealed on Friday that the turtle was relocated to a community center in New York City after last year’s playoff exit.
Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Cortes said that Bronxie is “safe and sound, and a big hit with the kids.”
Perhaps if the Yanks are in need of another late-season winning streak to solidify a playoff spot, they could borrow Bronxie again for another couple weeks.
