Nestor Cortes made Yankees history on Monday night thanks to some serious home cooking that dates back to the beginning of his pinstriped career.
Cortes, bouncing back from his worst start of the season, allowed just two runs over five innings of work in New York’s series-opening win against the lowly A’s. The Yankee lefty worked around six hits and two walks while the Bombers blasted four home runs to pick up the much-needed win.
For Cortes, it was the 26th time in 26 career starts at Yankee Stadium in which he did not allow more than three runs. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, those 26 straight starts makes up the longest streak in franchise history.
Clearly, Cortes enjoys pitching at home, making Monday’s start the perfect way to get back on track, though he admitted he still was struggling to command his fastball. But Cortes battled through it, keeping his franchise record streak alive.
