Paul O’Neill took to Twitter Tuesday afternoon with his reaction to Tuesday morning’s big news, that the Yankees would be retiring his No. 21 on August 21, thanking the organization for allowing it to happen:

It might seem notable for a man known just as much for punishing Gatorade coolers as punishing baseballs to pour his heart out on social media – but it’s actually just as rare for O’Neill to Tweet at all.

Prior to Tuesday, when he made that statement and also re-tweeted Yankees Tweets with the announcement and a tribute video, O’Neill’s last Twitter activity of any kind came back in September, when he retweeted Jack Curry’s announcement of a pending book being written by the two. And, his last actual Tweet was last Opening Day, when he Tweeted a photo of the YES crew in the booth at Yankee Stadium...but it was him on TV with the rest of the crew physically in the booth.

From Studio 21 to Monument Park, though? Pretty cool.
