Yankees president Randy Levine welcomed Carlos Rodon to the Bronx during Thursday’s press conference, and in the process, reminded everyone who runs the sport.
“There's no doubt the Yankees have been, are today, and will continue in the future as the flagship of Major League Baseball,” Levine said. “Wherever you go, all over the world, you’ll see a Yankee hat, a Yankee jacket, or a Yankee shirt. Because in many ways, when people think about baseball, the first thing that comes to their mind are the Yankees.”
The Mets have drawn up plenty of attention across town with Steve Cohen’s spending spree, but the Yanks bagged the biggest free agent prize of the offseason by retaining Aaron Judge, while Rodon represented one of the top free agent pitchers on the market, which Levine says is confirmation that the Bronx is one of the more desirable destinations for the game’s stars.
“A lot of players want to come here, but not everybody can succeed here,” Levine said. “We have great fans, this is the biggest media market in the world. But when they do come here, and they do succeed, it’s like nothing - it’s history. It’s magic.”
Levine says Rodon will be among that latter category.
“We are so convinced that you are going to succeed here,” Levine said to Rodon. “We feel it…we’re so happy you’re here.”
