The Tampa Bay Rays are now using Evan’s suspicions as a rallying cry.
After Evan suggested that Tampa may be cheating, noting how multiple “journeymen” were suddenly playing way above their career norms with the Rays, players were in the locker room on Monday wearing matching shirts that read, “Tampa journeymen. Hellooo?! What?!” the latter part mocking Evan’s reaction of disbelief when reading off the offensive stats of Taylor Walls, Harold Ramirez, Josh Lowe, and others who had previously played nowhere near to the level they were in 2023.
“Everyone gets the message,” Rays utilityman Luke Raley said, via Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. “That video, it hit us. So we wanted to own it
“Keep doubting us. We’re going to come out and keep playing good baseball.”
Evan saw the photo of Raley wearing the shirt, and he loved it, while Craig noted that the Rays have been a .500 team since Evan voiced his suspicions. Now, as the Yankees find their groove and are just 5.5 games out after making up three games in the last 10 days, Evan says the Rays are likely dealing with the realization that their grip on the division is inevitably fading.
“They deep down know what I know, and I think deep down what you know, and even deep down what Big Mac knows,” Evan said. “And that is, they're not winning the American League East.”
