Seven years ago today, fantasy became reality.
In reality, it was the most expected fantasy, as the final chapter of Derek Jeter’s New York tenure had to end in Hollywood fashion.
Playing in his final game at Yankee Stadium on this day in 2014, Jeter said goodbye to Yankee fans with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Orioles, who had erased a three-run deficit in the top half of the inning to set the stage for Jeter’s heroics.
Hiroki Kuroda pitched and eight-inning gem, David Robertson blew the save (yet still got the win), and Jeter broke out his classic inside-out swing one last time in the Bronx by lacing a single off Evan Meek on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the ninth to score pinch runner Antoan Richardson.
