The Yankees and Red Sox will play Friday night after Thursday’s series opener was postponed due to multiple COVID-19 cases among Yankee players, MLB announced on Friday afternoon.
Boston and New York are preparing to play Friday and resume their seasons after an unexpected day off to extend their All-Star break on Thursday. The game was postponed hours before first pitch after the Yankees canceled their batting practice out of caution to continue health protocols and contact tracing. The postponed game on Thursday will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Aug. 17.
Nestor Cortes Jr. and Wandy Peralta were both added to the COVID-19 IL on Thursday morning after Jonathan Loaisiga was place on the COVID list prior to the All-Star break. General manager Brian Cashman confirmed after Thursday’s postponement that all three had tested positive, and three more were awaiting confirmation of their test results. According to reports, those three players are Aaron Judge, Gio Urshela and Kyle Higashioka, with Jeff Passan reporting that those three players have now also been confirmed positives.
Since Judge played in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, along with five Boston All-Stars, those five Red Sox players were tested after Thursday’s postponement, so both teams could be shorthanded on Friday. But according to Rojas, the plan is to play, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that while more testing and results are due, there are currently no new cases after Thursday’s testing.
