BT and Sal listened to Hal Steinbrenner’s press conference on Tuesday to kick off the GM Meetings, and Sal did not come away believing that the Yankees were on the right track.
“I am not encouraged by that as far as the Yankees going out and spending this offseason,” Sal said after hearing Steinbrenner reiterate that he doesn’t believe a team needs to spend $300 million to win a championship.
“I’m not encouraged by what he’s saying here. I don’t think he gets it.”
Sal was even more sceptical once Steinbrenner began talking about Aaron Boone incorporating more bunting into game strategy next season.
“They did it! They figured it out!” Sal said sarcastically. “I smell a World Series on the horizon! Bunting!
“How about getting rid of launch angle, making contact, and valuing batting average more? I mean, come on. They gotta teach players how to bunt? Come on, what are we doing here?”
BT didn’t mind the idea of putting more of a priority on bunting, but he added that Steinbrenner would be leaving out one major problem, in that the Yankees haven’t situationally hit in years.
“I don’t mind it as much as some, because with the bullpen and the way the team is built, that extra run can win you four, five, or six games,” BT said. “But you still have to get that run in.”
