Sal doesn't buy caller's declaration that Yankee fans will soon boo Anthony Volpe

A caller declared to Sal Licata on Friday morning that Yankee fans were destined to start booing Anthony Volpe soon, as the top prospect struck out twice on Thursday night, and is now batting just .158 on the season.

But Sal, even with recent evidence that Yankee fans aren’t afraid to boo their brightest star, doesn’t see that happening.

“Even I would be shocked if Yankee fans did that,” Sal said. “It was bad enough booing Aaron Judge, somehow booing him after a record-breaking season. That was ridiculous.

“I would be stunned if Yankee fans booed Volpe. He’s getting his feet wet, he’s getting adjusted to the major league level.”

But Sal does admit that the Yanks could have a Volpe problem if he doesn’t start to hit soon. The 21-year-old clearly won the job in spring training, but offensively, he has struggled. If that continues, what do the Yankees do with him?

“You just don’t want this to spiral,” Sal said. “If you get into June and Volpe is hitting .160, then you have a problem.”
