As the Yankees reportedly prepare to welcome in a third party to investigate the workings of the organization, Sal can’t help but laugh at the reality that the most successful franchise in pro sports history is being audited, in a sense.
“It is kind of embarrassing that, as an organization, you need someone else to come in and tell you what’s wrong,” Sal said. “If we’re all sitting here saying, ‘You have one guy making the decisions…it’s been the same guy, running things essentially. He’s the final voice.’ Why can’t Hal just see that and say, ‘It’s time for a change here.’
“This is why I think the Mets are so much more set up for success moving forward. The Yankees are a mess. They’re having someone come in and audit the organization? What are we at, rock bottom here? Isn’t that usually where you are when you get audited?”
The Yankees are clearly in need of a change, and Sal said nothing makes that more apparent than the fact that they will miss the playoffs, in the expanded playoff era, despite having the eventual Cy Young winner and the reigning MVP.
Still, a third party evaluation isn’t a good look for the franchise.
“Criminal that they wasted Gerrit Cole’s season, and Judge’s too,” Sal said. “I know he got hurt, but you’re talking about two of the best players in the game. Even in a short season, he’s gonna hit 40 home runs. Unbelievable.”
