Sal can't believe Aaron Judge controversy exists: 'Give me a break'

Sal Licata didn’t want to give the Aaron Judge controversy any attention, but it ran through social media like wildfire, so he had to open with Judge’s controversial glances towards his own dugout.

Sal’s instant reaction: are we really doing this?

“Dude, come on. Seriously,” Sal said. “This type of stuff makes me contemplate what I’m doing with my life.

“The fact that it even has to be brought up…this is really gonna become a thing, because of something people saw on social media?”

Sal heard Judge’s explanation after the game, that he was looking to see who in his dugout was still chirping at the umpires after Aaron Boone had been ejected, and doesn’t understand why Judge’s actions were still being put under the microscope after what seemed like a perfectly sensible explanation.

“Right away, the assumption goes to cheating, as opposed to, ‘Hey, Aaron Boone is yelling at the umpire, he just got tossed, maybe there’s some commotion going on in the dugout,’ which seems pretty logical,” Sal said. “What is he looking for in the dugout? Someone tipping their hat? One person waving a flag saying ‘The catcher is setting up here’ or ‘Here comes a curveball’? I mean, come on. Give me a break.”

For Sal, the explanation isn’t that hard: the Blue Jays broadcasters made something out of nothing, overreacting fans made it an even bigger deal, when it should have been nothing more than the best home run hitter in the game doing what he does best.

“Sixty two of them last year, 10 more this year, and plenty more coming,” Sal said. “No cheating involved.

“I don’t know if it’s more on the Blue Jays broadcasters, or us for making a big deal about it.”
