Sal: Yanks getting right, but still don't trust them as World Series team

The Yankees are playoff bound, clinching a postseason spot with a thrilling win over the Mariners on Wednesday night.

The Yanks are now also in the driver’s seat for the AL East crown, now leading the division by five games over the scuffling Orioles, and are two games up in the loss column on the Guardians for the best record in the American League.

Still, Sal isn’t sold that the Bombers have what it takes to win their first pennant in 15 years.

“I still just don’t trust it,” Sal said. “I still don’t look at this team, even with them playing better and getting hot at the right time, I still don’t see them as a World Series team.

“Whether we believe Cole is gonna get it done in the postseason or Rodon or Gil, the rotation is set. The bullpen is set with Luke Weaver as the closer. Even the lineup, you look now, and it’s been as good as it’s been all year, because they’ve established Gleyber. Do I trust him? No, and that’s why I say I don’t trust them.”

Sal believes that the Yanks may be better built for October than they have been in recent years, but he sees problems in the field, specifically Gleyber Torres at second base, and doesn’t trust Anthony Volpe’s bat, or even Aaron Judge’s for that matter, at least not until he proves he can thrive in October. This year can finally be when things go differently, but right now, Sal isn’t sold on these Yanks.

“It’s all there for them now. They’re gonna win the division and get a bye,” Sal said. “They are fine tuning things and getting everything in order. And giving it their best shot in the postseason. I think it’s all great right now, but I still have a reservation about them getting it done in the postseason.”
