For Sal Licata, Tuesday’s crushing loss to the Yankees to open the Subway Series was a painful reminder that the Mets are still far behind their crosstown rivals.
“Everybody knows, whether you’re a Met fan or a Yankee fan, you already know the reality. The Yankees are so far beyond the Mets, it’s not even close,” Sal said. “The Mets, under Steve Cohen, are going to strive for greatness and to get to that level that the Yankees have been at for years, but they’re nowhere near that yet.
“They are clearly the superior team. The Mets are inferior in every way, shape or form.”
The Mets and their fanbase felt 2022 was the year they overtook the Bombers, especially after winning the first two games of the Subway Series, but the Yanks took the next two, and eventually won their division and advanced to the ALCS while the Mets squandered a big lead in their own division before losing in the Wild Card Series. Sal says this year is shaping up to be more of the same, and Mets fans have been dealing with that inferiority since the 2000 World Series.
“That was the one shot the Mets had to make things even in one swoop, and they lost in that World Series,” Sal said. “Yankees have been dominating this Subway Series since it’s been here in 1997. The only thing the Mets will have is that first one.
“Ultimately, the Yankees are the premier team.”
