Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake told reporters after Thursday’s loss that the coaching staff needs to take a look at why Luis Severino is not missing bats and barrels after another disastrous start, and Sal couldn’t tolerate another second of Blake’s response.
“Fire this guy,” Sal said. “Come on. I don’t want to call for people’s jobs, but come on, that is an embarrassing answer.
“He doesn’t have an answer for Severino? What did he just say right there?”
Sal considers Blake to be another “data applicator” who can’t give a somewhat clear answer as to what the Yanks can do to help Severino get right, and despite his strong track record with the performance of the Yankees pitching staff in recent years, Sal doesn’t think it’s worth having to hear those kind of responses.
“Oh, goodness. That was brutal,” Sal said. “I hate that answer there. He gave you nothing. I’m not saying he’s got to figure it out right there on the spot, but come on…this is a computer guy that is just going by the analytics and the numbers, give me a break.”
