This year’s Gold Glove winners will be announced on Sunday night, but it’s safe to say Sal won’t be tuning in.

When discussing Anthony Rizzo’s nomination as a finalist for first base in the American League, Sal ripped the state of the award, pointing to the amount of time Rizzo missed this season due to a concussion that the Yankees took painfully long to discover.

“He played 92 games!” Sal said. “Gold Glove is a sham. It’s a farce. It used to be great with Keith [Hernandez] and [Don] Mattingly. It means nothing. It’s worthless.

“What is this, a joke?”

Sal also noted Clint Frazier being nominated in the shortened 2020 campaign, but his frustration was with the recognition of Rizzo, who is going up against Nathaniel Lowe of the Rangers and Ryan Mountcastle of the Orioles.
Rizzo, a four-time Gold Glove winner, led AL first baseman in Outs Above Average in 2023, but did miss significant time.

“I’m not trying to knock Rizzo. I’m knocking the Gold Glove voting process,” Sal said. “Whoever is doing this - it’s a joke.

“He played 92 games, he’s gonna be the best first baseman? Get the hell out of here.”
