Sal: Brian Cashman continues to make excuses rather than make necessary changes

Brian Cashman spoke at the GM Meetings on Tuesday and praised Aaron Boone’s performance in the World Series and the team’s baserunning approach.

Sal Licata says it was a frustratingly familiar response which tells him that the Yankees have no interest in taking a hard look at things they could change and improve.

“I don’t think Cashman believes he has that big of a problem,” Sal said. “Cashman is always good with the excuses, whether it’s ‘We got cheated, we were injured,’ and now it’s ‘We just played our worst at the worst time.’ No, it wasn’t just the fifth inning that costed you. it was the entire series.

“Can you hold somebody accountable? The Yankees weren’t on the level of the National League teams. End of story. You got to the World Series in part because you were lucky how things broke for you. You weren’t a good team from June on.”

Sal says Cashman continues to ignore the Yankees’ “significant flaws,” and while the GM didn’t defend his operation with the same fire that he did last year, there were still some of the same refrains when it comes to questions about the team’s deficiencies on defense, on the bases, and other areas.

“Every step of the way, it’s excuses,” Sal said. “It’s never ‘We have to be better.’ he’s even defending the baserunning! It was confounding to sit there and listen to him talk about this stuff.”
