The Yankees are fading fast in the playoff race, in danger of missing the postseason for the first time in seven years.
If the Bombers continue to slide, they also could be in danger of finishing with a record below .500 for the first time in more than 30 years, which would signify a low point for a franchise that prides itself on consistently playing meaningful October baseball.
Given the state of the team and the mindset of the front office, Sal wonders if the Yanks are entering an extended dark age that the fanbase hasn’t endured since the early 1990s.
“Look at the roster. It’s a complete mess,” Sal said. “We are now entering a dark period for the Yankees. We haven’t seen it in 30 years, but isn’t everything cyclical?
“It’s been long enough. Yankee fans have been spoiled. Now, the unfortunate reality is, the team isn’t any good, and the front office isn’t going to do the necessary things to fix it. So, how can you believe anything is gonna change?”
Despite the disappointing season, Hal Steinbrenner has reportedly already deemed Brian Cashman’s job safe for 2024, and Sal believes that complacency could lead to smaller crowds next year, which could be the only wake-up call that Steinbrenner will respond to.
“Going into next year, I’d have to imagine those season ticket sales will be down,” Sal said. “Fans are not dumb…you’d have to be a fool to invest in season tickets for either of these teams next year. Why would you do that?”
